HOLIDAY WEATHER: Snow, rain Christmas Eve

A special weather statement has now shifted attention to Christmas Eve.

Periods of snow are forecast to spread across the Island Christmas Eve night before transitioning to rain over eastern parts of the Island late overnight, Environment Canada says in its most recent special weather statement for St. John's and vicinity. Although precipitation amounts are not expected to exceed warning criteria, this mixture of snow and rain has the potential to create poor driving conditions on slushy roads.

The latest forecast information suggests an area of low pressure over the Prairies will organize into a low pressure system as it tracks eastwards across the country Friday and Friday night. This system is expected to track across northern Newfoundland Saturday night.

The rain is expected to end by Sunday afternoon as the low moves out to sea. Periods of snow are forecast over central Newfoundland Sunday afternoon and night. This snow combined with strong northwesterly winds have the potential to reduce visibilities in blowing snow Christmas night.

People planning travel or other weather sensitive activities for Saturday night and Sunday are advised to watch for updated forecasts. Meteorologists will provide additional details as new information becomes available.
