The 18-year-old, Graham Veitch, was back in provincial court in St. John's this morning before Judge Mark Pike. He was represented by his new lawyer, Jason Edwards.
Edwards recommended the assessment. Crown prosecutor Jason House agreed.
Veitch has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of Dave Collins, 55, as well as a number of other charges: a charge of assaulting his mother with a hammer, a charge of assaulting his brother with a hammer, a charge of assaulting a police officer, a charge of theft and a charge of evading police.
Members of the RNC, fire department and ambulance services were called to a home on Cadigan’s Road in Logy Bay around 7 p.m. Sunday night in response to a report of a serious assault with a weapon. Collins was taken to hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Veitch allegedly stole Collins’ car and fled, but was located by police shortly after 11 p.m. in the Outer Cove area. Police say he rammed a marked police car and tried to drive around it, striking a second police car.
Lawyers originally agreed to have Veitch return to court Friday. However, the case was called again later in the day to reschedule it for Wednesday.
