The stage at Club One will come alive with Caribbean rhythms fused with a variety of sounds from across Atlantic Canada tonight as it hosts the Club One New Releases Caribbean and Atlantic Canadian Music Showcase.
A trio of acts from Newfoundland and Labrador will anchor this show and include singer/songwriter Janet Cull, the four-piece band Rum Ragged and blues duo Earle and Coffin.
These acts, and others from New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia, will perform together in what has become a musical extravaganza that will be filmed for Flow/CWC TV in the Caribbean and Bell Fibe TV1 in Canada and has been presented for the past four years as part of this project.
Additional segments for this show were filmed on location in Trinidad and Tobago in March.
“Each year the music gets better Fabian James, producer said in a news release Thursday.
“This year, we engaged a mentor from Canada and one from the Caribbean. This has definitely heightened the focus of the artists and given them specific direction. It has added a whole new dimension to the process,” he added.
Eight artists and groups from seven Caribbean nations were chosen and paired with eight artists or groups from Atlantic Canada to perform and fuse their musical styles.
When the artists perform in Newfoundland, each set of paired artists will have written two original songs together, that will be performed and filmed for TV and the Web in front of a live audience.
James joins musicians on the broadcast as they showcase their latest CD releases and discuss their song-writing process.
Each season a select few musicians are chosen from Canada and the Caribbean to take part in international musical fusion.
Artists are paired together and asked to write and perform new original pieces of music by fusing their own styles together to create something completely unique.
More than 60 Caribbean and Canadian musicians are participating in the project.
The show starts at 8 p.m. at Club One located on New Gower Street in St. John’s and residents and music lovers are urged to attend.
