The Newfoundland and Labrador Building Trades Council will contribute $250,000 toward the construction of the Salvation Army Centre of Hope Community Centre.
“Our organization values the tremendous work the Salvation Army does in our community every day, and we are pleased to partner with them in moving this project forward,” executive director Darin King said in a news release.
The Centre of Hope will provide 20 affordable, supportive housing units for adults aged 30-64. In collaboration with the City of St. John’s community plan, the Salvation Army will use a housing first approach to move people experiencing homelessness into dependent and permanent housing. Those housed there will get access to such services as mental health and addictions, education and community health.
“The economic decline in Western Canada and here at home continues to have a devastating effect on thousands of our people, many of whom will need our help now and in the years to come. The Salvation Army has been working in our community for over 100 years and will continue to support our most vulnerable people through the Centre of Hope to be built on Springdale Street,” said Dean Brinton, chairman of the capital campaign.
“The construction of the Centre of Hope will provide us with a much needed facility to continue our mission for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador,” said Lt.-Col. Eddie Vincent, divisional commander for the Salvation Army in Newfoundland and Labrador.
