A fire in a school bus in Mount Pearl Wednesday night destroyed the bus and damaged a nearby garage. Firefighters also had to deal with a broken fire hydrant in the area when their pumper ran out of water. There was a delay getting water on the blaze but Platoon Chief Brian Tucker of the St. John’s Regional fire department said they managed to get the hydrant working and finally extinguish the fire which had been sending thick plumes of smoke into the night sky.

Passersby and onlookers watched the incident from nearby parking lots as the firefighters hosed down the burning vehicle which was located next to the garage about fifty meters from Topsail Road. Tucker said the structure suffered damage from the fire but it was mainly contained to the bus. The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is investigating the incident.
