ST. JOHN’S, NL – Nearly 400 junior high students from across the province congregated at Macdonald Drive Junior High in St. John’s Saturday to compete for medals in seventeen different trade, technology and employability competition areas.

It was the 15th time Skills Canada Newfoundland and Labrador has held its annual Skills Canada Intermediate Challenge and F.I.R.S.T Lego League Robotics Competition.

The gold medal winners in most competition areas are invited to represent their school at the Skills Canada Provincial Competition on March 23, 2018, where they will compete against secondary students for the chance to represent the province at the 24th Annual Skills Canada National Competition in Edmonton, Alta. next summer.

“Throughout its fifteen-year history, the Skills Canada Intermediate Challenge has demonstrated its value as an ideal opportunity to expose young people to careers in skilled trades and technologies,” said Skills Canada Newfoundland and Labrador president Craig White.

“In the last five years alone, over half of all winners who progressed to the Skills Canada Provincial Competition won medals over students several years their senior. We take great pride in how the Skills Canada Intermediate Challenge provides youth with a large range of options to inform their decisions on course selection and career planning before they even enter high school.”
