There is no formal agreement yet, but the Republic of Turkey has offered, for the first time, a space in Gallipoli National Park for a caribou statue — a commemorative monument to the Royal Newfoundland Regiment.
Speaker Perry Trimper reported to the House of Assembly Wednesday on a trip he made to Turkey in January, as an ambassador for the province. The trip was decided on in December 2017, through unanimous vote of the House, with the intent of advancing discussions on the monument.
The Gallipoli statue would complete the “Trail of the Caribou,” with existing monuments in five sites of significance from the history of the regiment, in France and northern Belgium.
A delegation from Turkey was at the House of Assembly in St. John’s as Trimper reported the Turkish government’s proposal to establish the monument adjacent to the Hill 10 Cemetery in Gallipoli National Park.
Further discussions are needed on details, Trimper said.
The Turkish delegation will be in the province through Thursday.
