A male pedestrian had to be taken to hospital early Saturday morning after he was struck by a taxi on New Gower Street. The man was struck at the crosswalk in front of St. John’s city hall in the eastbound lane just before 1 a.m. The taxi driver and a number of onlookers tended to the victim as they waited for paramedics and firefighters to arrive on scene. The victim, who was conscious and talking to paramedics, was immobilized and placed on a stretcher to be taken to hospital. An official on scene said the man’s injuries did not appear life-threatening. In a second taxi-pedestrian collision at about 3:30 a.m., another taxi from a different company apparently struck a woman on Cavendish Square in front of the Sheraton Hotel Newfoundland. The woman was also taken to hospital with injuries that were not thought to be life-threatening. Both incidents are under investigation by the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary.
