Residents of St. John's and most parts of the Avalon Peninsula woke to the sound of ice pellets rattling off their windows Tuesday as a weather system that brough snow and ice pellets sweeps through the area.
Enviroment Canada issued a special weather statement at 5:15 a.m. this morning of a freezing rain warning for St. John's and vicinity, the Avalon Peninsula, Southeast Avalon peninsula and the Soutwest Avalon Peninsula.
There is expected to be ice buildup due to the freezing rain. The snow on the Avalon Peninsula will trainsition to ice pellets this morning and a prolonged period of freezing rain will occur this morning before tapering off sometime this afternoon.
Motorists and pedestrians are cautioned to expect slippery surfaces as they are expected to become ice covered as the ice and rain fall this morning.
All schools except for the St. John's area schools have been closed for at least this morning and updates will be made by the Newfoundland and Labrador English School Board as necessary.

At the St. John's International Airport, there are a number of cancellations shown in the board and delays of both arriving and departing flights this morning. Please check with the airport if you are travelling today in case you are effected by those flight changes.
Motorists are also ureged to use extreme caution if they must travel this morning as slippery conditions will be prevalent as the ice pellets and freezing rain make the roads slick.
