Russell Wangersky: On the road again

Published on June 17, 2017

It’s been a long two weeks in June for weather watchers and cabinet ministers. But here’s a little message for you: if you can’t get a cabinet minister to show up at your event, you’re not trying very hard. They’re shuffling more dates than a prom queen, and no event seems too small.

(The items in quotes are from just 15 days of news releases.)

“Media Advisory: Minister Kirby to Visit School in Musgravetown.”

Yes, since the first of June, they’ve scattered across the province and beyond.

“Media Advisory: Premier Ball to Announce Funding for Child Care Project in Labrador region.”

It’s actually quite remarkable; some might say that I’m complaining that they are getting out to meet the public. But that’s not really the case.

“Media Advisory: Minister Bennett to Participate in Launch of NLOWE Action Plan.”

I guess what I’m most curious about is the time involved; the time away, I guess, from the business of running the province.

“Media Advisory: Minister Kirby to Visit Schools on the Bonavista Peninsula.”

Then, there’s the travel time and costs.

“Media Advisory: Minister Gambin-Walsh to Attend Choices for Youth AGM.”

I mean, last I heard, we were a province in dire economic straits.

“Media Advisory: Minister Coady to Provide Keynote Address at Expo Labrador Welcome Luncheon.”

“Media Advisory: Minister Joyce to Speak at Environment Day Activities in Port Union.”

One of the worst performers in the nation, with a shrinking gross domestic product.

“Media Advisory: Media Availability Following Outer Ring Road Clean-up.”

It is important to see that we have an involved government.

“Media Advisory: Minister Mitchelmore to Attend Pan-Atlantic International Business Development Mission.”

But what is the important of having the face of the minister or the premier at an event, anyway?

“Media Advisory: Minister Kirby to attend Historical Agreement between the Federal, Provincial and Territorial Governments on a Multilateral Framework for Early Learning and Child Care.”

“Media Advisory: Minister Haggie to Bring Greetings at Association of Registered Nurses AGM.”

“Media Advisory: Minister Kirby to Attend Full-Day Kindergarten Celebration.”

Isn’t the role of government to provide direction and funding — and isn’t politicians putting their faces out in front of everything more about politics than governing?

“Media Advisory: Minister Bennett to Participate in Citizenship Ceremony.”

“Media Advisory: Minister Gambin-Walsh to Address Coalition of Persons with Disabilities AGM.”

I suppose it’s important.

“Media Advisory: Minister Coady to participate in eDNAtec Official Opening.”

“Media Advisory: Minister Kirby to Speak at Sharing Our Cultures Canada 150 Youth Event.”

But sending ministers to visit schools?

“Media Advisory: Minister Kirby to Attend School Event in St. John’s.”

“Media Advisory: Premier Ball to Participate in Council of the Federation Mission to Washington D.C.”

“Media Advisory: Minister Mitchelmore to Attend the Ninth Annual Iceberg Festival.”

Isn’t it pretty much the same as sending ministers out to hand over keys to new fire trucks?

It seems that way to me. Because I’m not sure that you need a minister to watch someone plant barley.

“Media Advisory: Minister Crocker to View Planting of First Malting Barley Crop.”

Or pay them to take a trip to their own riding.

“Media Advisory: Minister Gambin-Walsh to Attend Placentia Bay Age Friendly Fair.”

“Media Advisory: Parliamentary Secretary Davis to Launch 17th Annual Nickel Independent Film Festival.”

Hey, dietitians: here’s the minister.

“Media Advisory: Minister Haggie to Address National Dietitians Conference.”

It all piles up. You must see my point.

“Media Advisory: Minister Crocker to Speak at World Oceans Day Event.”

“Media Advisory: Minister Mitchelmore to Launch New Initiative for Young Entrepreneurs.”

Wait — I think the media advisories have reached my neck.

“Media Advisory: Parliamentary Secretary Davis to Participate in Community Centre Opening.”

“Media Advisory: Minister Bennett to Speak to the Atlantic Provinces Economic Council.”

“Media Advisory: Minister Kirby to Attend Parachute Safe Kids Week Celebration.”

“Media Advisory: Minister Joyce to Attend Heart & Stroke Foundation Funding Announcement.”

I’m drowning.

“Media Advisory: Minister Crocker to Attend World Oceans Day Event.”

“Media Advisory: Minister Mitchelmore to Attend College of the North Atlantic’s Craft and Textiles Fashion Show.”

“Media Advisory: Minister Kirby to Attend Teacher Induction Ceremony.”

“Media Advisory: Parliamentary Secretary Holloway to Announce Funding for Destination Management Organizations.”

“Media Advisory: Minister Coady to Address Baie Verte Mining Conference.”

Why did I even jump in here? Help me, somebody. Help me.
