Jeers: to a ballooning bridge budget. By golly, the Sir Ambrose Shea Lift Bridge in Placentia boasts “9,200 metres of steel piling, 3,800 cubic metres of concrete, 150 tonnes of reinforcing steel and approximately 976 tonnes of structural steel.” Just do us a favour, provincial government, and let us know when the darned thing’s fully operable again, will ya? A news release issued Friday let mariners know the lift bridge will be closed to marine traffic for three weeks, beginning today, for maintenance. (You can still drive across). The bridge was officially opened to much fanfare on Sept. 23, 2016, at a cost of $47.7 million. The initial cost was pegged at $28.5 million in 2014. It’s only five months old. Let’s hope the maintenance costs don’t keep piling up.
