In reference to the couple travelling back and forth to Bell Island (“’Safer to stay in our car,’” Telegram, Oct. 20), I can understand their frustration with having to vacate their vehicle, as I, also — when crossing on the Veteran from Farewell to Fogo — have to leave my car.
I am quite able to climb those open steep stairs, thank goodness, but my problem is having to take my pet dog up on deck and having to stand outside in all kinds of weather, without any protection from the elements. I know some animals are content when their owners leave them in a vehicle, but what about the ones who have great anxiety from all the strange loud sounds that the boat makes during the crossing? Really, when as the couple says, for years they were allowed to stay in their cars and now all of a sudden, with these new expensive boats, the rules are changed — is it for our safety, or insurance against being sued? I have to wonder.
