Letter: Heart & Stroke needs your help

Mary Ann Butt, CEO, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador speaks at a news conference Thursday. Thanks to $100,000 from the provincial government, the foundation will expand its Restart a Heart – Restart a Life campaign to install Automated External Defibrillators (AEDS) in public facilities throughout the province.

Each year in February, Heart & Stroke’s Person-to-Person (P2P) Heart Month campaign is launched with smiling faces at our doors, a meet-and-greet by neighbours who haven’t seen each other in a while, the making of new friends and, of course, a chance to raise critically needed funds in our fight against heart disease and stroke.

The efforts of our volunteers, some of whom have canvassed for us for too many years to count, have been the very lifeblood of our organization. Likewise, those who donate to the foundation provide an investment in the health of the province through dollars that are vital to our mission of preventing disease, saving lives and promoting recovery.

Over the past 60 years, deaths from heart disease and stroke have declined by 75 per cent. However, there is much work still to be done. Not only does our province lead the country in risk factors, but there are families further threatened due to unique genetic risk factors, putting them at risk for sudden cardiac arrest. We must generate the next medical breakthroughs, so that residents of Newfoundland and Labrador don’t miss out on precious moments.

With a number of our dedicated volunteers no longer able to canvass, Heart & Stroke is always happy to hear from people who are willing to canvass their neighbourhoods. We appeal to those who may have a few hours to share and to be part of a great organization. If so, please reach out to Judy, our campaign manager, who would love to hear from you: 709-383-1024 or [email protected]

In closing, sincere thanks to those who have already donated to our P2P campaign. If you have not been canvassed, we hope you will consider making a donation online by visiting www.heartandstroke.ca/give or by calling us at 709-753-8521, toll-free 1-888-473-4636.

Life. We don’t want you to miss it.
