I moved to Newfoundland from South Carolina in 2008. This was a dream come true for me. My mother was born here and I spent every summer growing up here. Nowhere on Earth compares to this island for me.

I’m not wearing rose-tinted glasses; I know there are problems here, as is everywhere. But the spirit of the people make it seem as if anything can be accomplished.

We need to realize that we are partly responsible, by not taking an interest, letting multiple-term politicians run on cruise control. It’s time to stand up and say no more.

Now it seems every other day an article comes out about town councils conflict of interest or some form of corruption. Citizens shake their fists and say politicians are not fit. We need to realize that we are partly responsible, by not taking an interest, letting multiple-term politicians run on cruise control. It’s time to stand up and say no more.

I urge everyone to start attending the town meetings. Learn the laws and regulations. Keep them honest by asking questions, watching the proceedings, read past minutes. We can make a difference. We can change the status quo.

Take back our towns and remind the councils who they truly work for. Newfoundland can be the leader in responsible governing.
