Dr. Dominic will be missed

On Nov. 28, 2013, Dr. Rufus Dominic passed away at the age of 94.

He was a medical pioneer who practised as a family physician on Bell Island and later as a pediatrician at the Janeway for almost 30 years.

He started his pediatric practice in 1966, the year the Janeway opened, sub-specializing in pediatric hematology and general pediatrics.

Dr. Dominic was a remarkable physician who made huge contributions to the Janeway, the community and to training the medical students and pediatric residents at the Janeway.

He was an excellent teacher, particularly at the bedside with his students.

He was very good at teaching the basics of primary pediatric care that future family physicians could use in their busy practice.

He was a good lifelong learner himself who never stopped inquiring about new treatments and diagnosis for his patients.

He was quick to seek advice on a patient whose condition was puzzling him.

He worked long and busy hours and was our only hematologist for several years but never complained of the hard work.

He was an excellent practitioner of the art and science of medicine and not only saved lives but greatly improved the quality of life for the many children he treated. He once delivered the only baby born at the Janeway.

He was always friendly to his colleagues, the nurses, the students and the whole hospital staff. He was always available to the many community physicians by phone and was always very respectful to them.

We never remember him becoming angry or putting someone down. He was a gentleman in the true sense of the word.

He often was not fully appreciated for his outstanding achievements. Perhaps this was because he was a quiet and humble person despite his many successes.

He and his wife Eleanor were very proud of his wonderful family who dearly loved him. Family meant a lot to both parents and they were certainly blessed with children and grandchildren.

His daughter, Anna, became a pediatrician and practices at the Janeway.

He was always a good Christian who was active in his church. He certainly believed in the phrase, “Do onto others as you would have them do onto you.”

He has passed from this life but has left a vast legacy in the field of pediatrics and family medicine. To quote a mourner at his funeral, “Dr. Dominic was a legend in his time.”

For us and other colleagues it was a privilege to have known and worked with him and he will be missed for a long time.
