A rebuttal from the pro-life side of the abortion debate

I write to comment on “Guilt propaganda in abortion debate has dire consequences” by Marian Walsh, The Telegram May 17. For propaganda purposes Walsh seeks to undermine the truth about the evils of abortion. The Catholic Church, for hundreds of years, has taught that abortion is murder, and brutal murder at that. Church teaching on abortion is not church law but Divine Law, the fifth commandment — “thou shalt not kill.”

The church teaches that abortion even legalized harms women seriously in their biological, psychological and moral being. Abortion is threatening universal peace. The language of Walsh’s letter is designed to make lies appear as truth and killing respectable. The unborn child has no right according to Planned Parenthood’s pamphlet (1971). Their statement reads, “Pregnancy is a venereal disease treated by evacuation of the uterine contents.” This is evil personified. No wonder Pope Benedict called feminism in its radical form another religion.

Ms. Walsh, that you and other pro-choice groups have as your mantra that abortion is in the interest of women’s reproductive health is ludicrous. Kermit Gosnell has been found guilty of murder resulting from the monstrous and horrific procedures undertaken by him at various abortion clinics throughout the United States. However, he carried out those procedures under the guise of women’s reproductive health.

Studies by experts in Spain and Finland revealed women who abort suffered symptoms of depression (80 per cent), 40 per cent have considered suicide, sexual dysfunction (40 per cent), and drug abuse (30 per cent), behavioural changes (60 per cent) or irritability (70 per cent), suicide (six per cent) again the reason for the abortions — women’s reproductive health.

Walsh writes that abortion will eventually become a normal medical procedure. She plunges into the ridiculous by accusing pro-life people of causing post-abortion trauma by informing women that abortion will hurt them.

The late Dr. Bernard Nathanson was the founder of the United States National Abortion Rights Action League. After 60,000 abortions performed he turned against abortion on the grounds it was the killing of human life.

After discerning by means of the ultrasound that the baby in the mother’s womb was a human being, Dr. Nathanson produced “Silent Scream,” a film that justly horrified the nation. It showed the “fetus” trying desperately to move away from the intruding vacuum.

Dr. Nathanson has said, “Abortion is the purposeful destruction of what is undeniably human life.” He has said it is an “impermissible act of deadly violence.” Nathanson said, as a scientist, “I know — not believe — know that human life begins at conception.”

Pope Francis says, “The pregnant woman doesn’t carry a toothbrush in her womb nor a tumour. Science teaches that from the moment of conception the new being has all the genetic code; it’s impressive. It’s not therefore a religious question but clearly a moral one based on science.”

Religious freedom in this province is rapidly being eroded — remember the cross on St. Matthew’s School. Scripture is disregarded as the state redefines marriage.

The famous preacher Fulton Sheen was asked why it is more important than at any other time to restore religion and morality to education. Sheen answered, “Because we are entering into a new era of history wherein the grave threats to man’s freedom is from the state.”
