Elizabeth Hicks of Carbonear has claimed gold for the host team in the 100 metre hurdles at the 2012 NL Summer Games.

Hicks sprinted and jumped her way to victory this morning (Aug. 24) at the Carbonear Recreation Complex.

It was one of only a handful of gold medals won by the host team so far during the Games.

The race featured four competitors born between 1996 and 2001, with Hicks finishing in a time of 18.07 seconds, about half-a-second faster than Emily Chaisson of Western.

It was the second medal in as many days for Hicks, who took silver on Thursday (Aug. 23) in the 200 metre dash.

She will be gunning for her third medal later this afternoon when she competes in the final of the 100 metre dash. Hicks had the second fastest time in the preliminaries.
