Biathlete Seamus Boyd-Porter of St. John’s will be the province’s sole athlete in the 2017 World University Games scheduled for Jan. 29–Feb. 8 in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
A multi-sport athlete, Boyd-Porter, who attends Memorial University, competed in two Canada Games — in mountain biking at the 2013 Summer Games in Sherbrooke, Que., and cross-country skiing at the 2015 Winter Games in Prince George, B.C. He registered three top-10 finishes in Prince George.
One hundred and 22 Canadians — 88 student-athletes and 34 mission and support staff — will compete in six sports in Kazakhstan.
Sports on the World U Games schedule are biathlon, cross-country skiing, alpine skiing, snowboard, along with men’s and women’s curling and hockey.
