Mark Greene edged out Seamus Boyd-Porter by only 33 seconds to win the 11th Orangetheory Cape to Cabot 20-kilometre road race Sunday in St. John’s.
Caroline McIlroy added another title to her impressive resume, finishing two minutes ahead of her nearest rival for the women’s championship. McIlroy was 13th overall.
Greene finished in a time of 1:16.23, while Boyd-Porter was second in 1:16.56. Charlie Kourvelas placed third in 1:21.23.
McIlroy covered the course in 1:27.08. Alison Walsh was second in 1:29.36, and Janelle Simmons was third in a time of 1:32.40.
A record 447 finishers completed the grueling race, which started at Cape Spear and finished on Signal Hill. Five hundred runners signed up for the event.
Only three kilometres of the 20 in total were run on flat ground. Facing the runners on the course was a 550-metre elevation gain, and 450-metre elevation drop.
The last mile of the race is uphill, to the top of Signal Hill, and dubbed the Munn Mile. Boyd-Porter was the quickest up the Munn Mile in 8:10, while McIlroy sprinted Signal Hill the quickest, in a time of 9:38.
