CLARENVILLE, N.L. — Softball season is officially upon us, and the annual leagues are in full swing again.

The Clarenville Molson Men’s Slo-Pitch Softball league is a nine-team league this year, playing three nights a week at two different fields in town.

The Clarenville Area Women’s Softball League has grown to six full teams, including a waitlist for potential players.

Scott Maidment announced two additions to the softball season this year.

In the annual Labour Day tournament held in Clarenville, there will be a women’s division introduced to the large-scale event.

As well, the playoff MVP award for the men’s league will now be named after the late George Martin.

“He played ball in our league for several years,” explained Maidment. “He was around 68 or 69 when he retired from the league.”

He added it’s fitting they name it in his honour.

In addition, the Clarenville men’s league is hosting a qualifier tournament July 13-15. To register, you can see the local softball Facebook page, or call Maidment at 425-2551.

The women’s league is hosting a tournament on Aug. 17-19, with league playoffs on Sept. 8.
