St. John's loses tough one to B.C.; at 16U girls' championship, province drops quarter-final game

The Bigs St. John’s Capitals finished 1-3 at Baseball Canada’s senior men’s championship in Victoria, B.C.

St. John’s closed out the championship with a 7-3 loss to British Columbia Saturday, despite outhitting the west coasters 11-8. Earlier in the day, the Caps dropped a 16-7 decision to Ilderton, Ont.

The tournament highlight came Friday night with a 5-1 decision over Alberta. In that game, Dan Connors pitched a complete game, giving up only one run on a home run in the first inning.

He then settled in and did not give up another run the rest of the game. He allowed eight hits, and struck out five.

Trevor Clarke and Andrew Paul both had a pair of hits for St. John’s.

The Caps opened the tournament Thursday with a 6-1 loss to Quebec.

Meanwhile, at the 16-years and under national invitational in Bedford, N.S., Newfoundland and Labrador lost their quarter-final game 11-1 to Nova Scotia 1 Saturday.

Player of the game Andrea Turner started the game, and was tagged with the loss. Katie Penney pitched in relief.

Joelle Vokey, Mackenzie Byrne and Brianna Saunders had the Newfoundland hits.

Newfoundland was 3-0 entering the playoffs.
