Rebecca Spracklin has never stepped on a baseball field.
She’s never caught a fly ball.
She’s never ran the bases.
She has never experienced the sweet sound of the bat making contact with the ball.
She doesn’t know all the positions on the diamond.
But, the 11-year-old Deer Lake native has her own multi-coloured baseball glove.

That’s all she needs to venture into another sport to keep her physically active and socially engaged with other young girls in her age group.
Spracklin, a Grade 5 student at Elwood Elementary, is excited about her rookie season in the new Deer Lake minor baseball program, a grassroots program that will come to fruition for 80 boys and girls beginning July 9 in the airport town.
Spracklin is an avid hockey player who admits she’s tried some sports for a period of time but eventually got bored with doing the same thing over and over again. Hockey is the only sport that she didn’t experience boredom, but she’s excited to find her way on the diamond because it’s something different for her to try and she sees herself getting a lot of exercise with running a big part of the game.
It’s a venue that she seeks with fun always on her mind. She doesn’t’ care about the score when she’s competing in sports because she just loves having fun with her friends and looks forward to meeting other young girls through participation.
She has no idea what position she will try to play, but she hopes to be pretty good with the bat, insisting to The Western Star that she would hit more than one homer once she gets comfortable.
A girl who loves to play piano and enjoys camping, hanging out with friends having fun is all that matters to her no matter what activity she’s involved in so she’s excited about learning the game of baseball over the summer.
“I feel very excited. It’s different so exciting,” said the daughter of Cory and Terri Robbin Spracklin. “Sometimes when I play the same sports over and over again I kind of get bored of it.”
This Toronto Blue Jays fan can only smile when she thinks about the fun and friendships that await her on the diamond.
