The Knights scored three runs in the eighth inning to upset the Gonzaga Vikings 7-4 and draw first blood in the St. John’s Molson Senior Baseball League semifinals Monday night at St. Pat’s Ball Park.

Game 2 of the best-of-five series goes 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Pearl’s Smallwood Drive Ball Park.

Knights (7-13) finished fourth during the regular season, while the Vikings (14-6) were in top spot.

A.J. Whiffen (8IP, 12H, 4R, 4ER, 0BB, 7K, 2HB) gave up four runs early, but settled down to register the win. Dave Lahey (8IP, 6H, 7R, 0ER, 4BB, 5K) was the hard-luck loser.

Whiffen led his team at the plate with a pair of hits. Bernie Madden had two hits in a losing cause.

The second semifinal game between second-place Holy Cross and third-place Shamrocks was rained out. Game 1 of that series is set to go 6 p.m. Wednesday at St. Pat’s.
