The Corner Brook Barons, by virtue of their 4-1 series win over the St. John’s Winmar Capitals in last year’s provincial final, are the provincial representatives, while the Capitals are the host team.
St. John’s has represented the province at 12 the previous 13 national championships — the team was missing several key players in 2012 and opted not to make a trip to British Columbia — with the Capitals’ best finish being an appearance in the bronze-medal game in 2009.
Opening ceremonies are tonight at St. Pat’s Ball Park in St. John’s, followed by a home run derby in aid of the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
The tournament begins in earnest on Thursday morning. The Barons open against Nova Scotia at 4 p.m. and the Capitals take on Saskatchewan at 7 p.m. Both games are at St. Pat’s. Games will also be played at Smallwood Field in Mount Pearl.
