Newfoundland teams open with losses to Nova Scotia at national baseball championships

In Victoria, B.C., the Gonzaga RMM Vikings of the St. John’s senior men’s league gave up six runs in the 6th inning en route to an 11-1 loss to an entry from Dartmouth N.S.

Dan Connors took the loss, while Peter Madden and James Walsh had the only hits for the Newfoundland entry.

The Vikings take on the Sherwood Park Athletics of Alberta today in the second game of what will be a four-game preliminary-round schedule.

Meanwhile, in Summersde, P.E.I., at the Ray Carter Cup Canadian male under-15 championship, Newfoundland’s provincial bantam team lost 7-2 to Nova Scotia.

Starting pitcher Cam Brewer of C.B.S. took the loss, striking out six, and allowing seven hits and a walk in five innings of work.

Newfoundland takes on Manitoba today in Summerside.
