It was a period of time when teams were defined by religion — the Anglicans and United Church followers with the Feildians, and Roman Catholics with St. Bon’s, St. Pat’s and Holy Cross.

“Some of the fans were like savages,” MacDonald said in an Aug. 19, 2006 Telegram story. “But the players were fine. We had no religious prejudices. In fact, my best friend was Hughie Fardy of St. Bon’s. We were all friends, no matter if it was Gordon Breen of Holy Cross or Jackie Withers of St. Pat’s.”

MacDonald had been living on Random Island for over a decade. A funeral service will take place on Thursday from the United Church in Lady Cove.
