Phillips played for many years in the St. John’s junior and senior baseball league with the Gonzaga Vikings.

Following his playing days, he took over the coaching reins for many teams, including clubs that represented the province in national play. Up until last month, Phillips was coach of the St. John’s Junior Capitals, leading them to six straight provincial junior titles.

In addition to playing and coaching, Phillips also umpired, working the St. John’s intermediate and senior leagues, provincial and Atlantic championships.

He was Baseball Newfoundland and Labrador’s senior/junior division umpire of the year in 2014.

If that wasn’t enough, Phillips was also a former president of the St. John’s Minor Baseball Association, and served as Baseball NL’s minor chairman for four years.

Resting at Caul’s Funeral Home, a funeral mass will take place 9:30 a.m. Wednesday from Mary Queen of Peace Church.
