Vikings, Shammies still share top spot in St. John's senior league after Tuesday wins

The OMT Shamrocks and RMM Gonzaga Vikings remain tied for first place after each posted wins in St. John's Molson senior baseball Tuesday night at St. Pat's Ball Park.

While the Shammies and Vikings each came away with victories, they did so in much different fashion, with Gonzaga outscoring Holy Cross Trinity Pub 14-9 , while the Shamrocks blanked the Blazers 3-0.

In the Vikings' win, Ken O'Brien had four hits for Gonzaga (6-2), including a couple of doubles, in four trips to the plate.

Scott Hynes pitched the win, going the distance while allowing five earned runs on nine hits and two walks. He struck out four.

Gonzaga got to Holy Cross starter Kevin Cashin early, tagging him for 11 runs -- eight of them earned -- in just one inning of work. Matt Smith pitched the final six innings for the Crusaders, allowing three unearned runs.

Brian Kirkpatrick had three hits and drove in three runs for Holy Cross (2-6), which has lost six straight games after opening the season with two wins.

In the shutout win by the Shamrocks (6-2), Ben Murphy spun a two-hitter over six innings, striking out eight while walking two batters. Dylan Mackenzie pitched a scoreless seventh inning for the save.

Travis Jackson went the distance on the mound for the Mount Pearl-based Blazers, allowing two unearned runs.
