The Grand Falls-Windsor Cataracts look to get back in their Central West Senior Hockey League semifinal series on home ice this weekend.
The Cataracts trail the defending champion Clarenville Caribous 2-0 in the best-of-seven series after the Caribous posted a pair of wins at Clarenville’s Eastlink Events Centre last weekend.
Game 3 goes 7:30 tonight at Joe Byrne Memorial Stadium in central Newfoundland, with Sunday’s Game 4 a 1:30 p.m. start.
The Cataracts are hoping to have all-star goalie A.J. Whiffen back in the net. Whiffen has been hampered with a groin strain suffered during the second half of the season.
In addition to Whiffen, backup Jason Stone is also questionable, which might lead to 19-year-old Noah Weir, a graduate of the Central major midget program, getting the start. Weir played in last Sunday’s 3-2 Cataracts loss, making 35 saves.
The winner of the semifinal will play the Gander Flyers in the league final.
Prior to Sunday’s game, three former Cataracts will be honoured. Jim “Bucky” Hannaford and Cec Thomas will have their jerseys retired, and former player and key organizer Walt Davis will have a banner raised in the builder category.
