Gushue rink will headline summer curling event


Curling might be thought of as a winter activity, but it is fast becoming an all-season sport.

Witness the Everest Curling Challenge, a new world-class event that will be played in Fredericton, N.B., in August.

World champion rinks skipped by Brad Gushue of St. John’s and Rachel Homan have been revealed as among the 32 men’s and women’s teams that will be entered in a winner-take-all format that feature a total cash prize of $200,ooo.

The event will be aired across Canada on TSN

and streamed live in the U.S. on ESPN3.

The competition format and full team rosters for the Everest Curling Challenge will be announced in the coming months.

The Everest Challenge means what has already become a short off-season for the Gushue rink will become even shorter.

Gushue, Mark Nichols, Brett Gallant and Mark Nichols still aren’t finished with the 2016-17 curling season. They began play Tuesday night in Calgary at the Humpty's Champions Cup, a Grand Slam competition that is the final event in the World Curling Tour schedule.
