Brad Gushue's rink is 7-2 heading into a key matchup against Team Canada tonight at Mile One Centre.

For a second day in a row, Newfoundland and Labrador will get only short rest before its evening game at the Tim Hortons Brier.

The Brad Gushue foursome of Mark Nichols, Brett Gallant and Geoff Walker pulled out another nail-biter in the afternoon draw, this time an 8-7 decision over Glenn Howard’s Ontario rink Thursday afternoon at Mile One Centre.

Gushue plays Kevin Koe’s Team Canada tonight in Draw 16.

Koe was also a winner this aftenoon, beating Mike McEwen of Manitoba 6-3. Quebec’s Jean-Michel Menard downed Mike Kennedy of New Brunswick 9-4, and Jamie Murphy of Nova Scotia doubled Jamie Koe of the Northwest Territories 8-4.

Heading into tonight’s draw, Gushue, Kevin Koe and McEwen are all 7-2. Menard and Brad Jacobs of Northern Ontario are 7-3.

Gushue also went to an extra end Wednesday, before beating John Morris of British Columbia 5-4.

Newfoundland hit the ice less than two hours later, and beat Menard in the night draw.

Against Ontario, Gushue led 3-1 after three ends, but Howard, the four-time Brier winner who is making a record 17th appearance at the nationals, hung in the game, sending the things to an extra end with two in the ninth.
