Brooke Godsland and her Re/Max Centre (St. John’s Curling Club) teammates got off to a terrific start at the Canadian junior curling championship in Victoria, B.C., over the weekend, opening their six-game preliminary-round schedule with two wins.

Godsland, third Megan Kearley, second Gabrielle Molloy and lead Michelle Taylor posted a 6-3 win over Alberta on Saturday, the first day of the competition and 10-6 victory over Nova Scotia on Sunday.
That set up a big match late Sunday (1 a.m. NT) against Saskatchewan, which shared the lead with Newfoundland and Labrador in Pool A entering the game.
There are two seven-team pools.
The same goes in the national junior men’s competition, also being held in Victoria.
In that championship, the Greg Blyde rink from the St. John’s Curling Club lost its first two games, falling 8-5 to Manitoba and 7-4 to Alberta.
However, Blyde, third Liam Gregory, second Ian Withycombe and lead Connor Stapleton bounced back for a 9-5 win over New Brunswick Sunday evening and also had a late-night game against P.E..I.
The coaches of the two Newfoundland teams are Craig Withycombe (men) and Mark Noseworthy (women).
