Provincial junior curling teams start play at nationals today

A pair of Newfoundland teams will open play at the Canadian Junior Menʼs and Womenʼs Curling Championships in Stratford, Ont., today.

Representing the province in men’s play for the second straight year is the Greg Smith rink out of the Caribou Curling Club in Stephenville. At last year’s event in Corner Brook, the Smith and his team of third Ryan McNeil-Lamswood, second Kyle Barron and lead Craig Laing finished with a 3-6 record.

They boys take on Ontario in Draw 1 this afternoon at 3 p.m. NT, and meet Nova Scotia in Draw 2 action this evening at 8 o’clock.

The provincial female team, meanwhile, will play just once on the opening day when they face Alberta in Draw 2. The team, skipped by Brooke Godsland, includes mate Megan Kearley, second stone Gabrielle Molloy and lead Michelle Taylor.

This year’s event is being played at the Stratford Rotary Complex, a facility that features two ice surfaces — RBC Arena and Molson Arena — meaning every game at the Juniors will be played on arena ice for the first time in history.
