Between them, Stacie Curtis and Heather Strong have won the last seven Scotties provincial women’s curling championships, so it shouldn’t be a surprise to find the names of the two St. John’s skips atop of the standings at the 2018 NL Scotties, being held this week at the Re/Max Centre (St. John’s Curling Club).
Curtis, who has won four provincial titles, including the last two, has a 4-0 record heading into her two games today, the final day of round-robin play at the event.
One of those games is against Strong, who has 12 provincial titles to her credit and also has a 4-0 record. Strong’s latest win came Thursday night as she stole points in the last two ends to beat Rebecca Roberts (1-4) of St. John’s 7-6.
All seven entries at this year’s event regularly curl out of the Re/Max Centre, including the reigning provincial junior women’s champions, skipped by Mackenzie Glynn of St. John’s. The young team is in third place with three wins in four games, including a 6-5 victory over Kelli Sharpe (1-3) in another Thursday-night game that was decided by a last-end steal.
Beth Hamilton is 2-2 after defeating Cindy Miller of the Re/Max Centre 7-5 Thursday night, leaving Miller winless through five games.
The provincial winner will represent Newfoundland and Labrador at the 2018 national Scotties Tournament of Hearts Jan. 27-Feb. 4 in Penticton, B.C.
