The defending champion Clarenville Caribous grabbed a 2-0 series lead over the Grand Falls-Windsor Cataracts in the Central-West Senior Hockey League semifinal with a pair of weekend wins on home ice.

At the Eastlink Events Centre Sunday, Justin Pender, Chris Sparkes and Brad Crann scored the goals as the Caribous shaded the Cataracts 3-2. Steve Yetman had both goals for the visitors.

Tyler Whiffen stopped 30 of 32 shots for Clarenville. Noah Weir, 19, a graduate of the Central major midget squad, made 35 saves for the visitors.

In the series opener Saturday n Clarenville, Ryan Delaney potted a pair of goals for the ’Bous, and Ryan Desrosiers and Rod Mahoney netted singles in a 4-2 Clarenville win. Yetman and Kyle McGuirk replied.

Tyler Whiffen made 27 saves to record the win. A.J. Whiffen stopped 23 shots and Jason Stone made 17 saves in sharing the Cats’ goaltending workload,

The series shifts to Joe Byrne Memorial Stadium for Games 3 and 4 next Saturday and Sunday.

The winner will meet the Gander Flyers in the league final.
