Here are five facts concerning The Telegram 10-Mile Road Race — the Tely 10 — which is scheduled for Sunday, July 22:
• The year’s race is the 91st annual Tely 10. Registration is closed, but you can confirm your entry and see more race details here.
• Once again, the race gets under way with the firing of the starter’s pistol at 8 a.m. Wheelchair competitors start at 7:55 a.m. Only competitive runners expecting to run the race in less than 60 minutes should occupy the front corral. Runners expecting to run the race under 65 minutes should occupy the next corral, and so on.
• The course remains the same as it’s been in recent memory. The race starts on McNamara Road, off Topsail Road, in the Town of Paradise near the Paradise Community Centre. Runners proceed eastward on Topsail Road, Cornwall Avenue, LeMarchant Road, Harvey Road and Military Road, turning left on to Bannerman Road to finish just past the Bannerman Park swimming pool.
• An awards presentation starts approximately 10 a.m. on the Bannerman Park ball field. Presentations will be made to the male and female champions, and top five male and female runners; Tely 10 Commemorative Pins; the Dr. John Williams Award, to the runner or walker who has inspired others through enthusiastic and spirited participation in the Tely 10; and team awards.
• The course record holders are Paul McCloy, who stopped the clock in 47:04 in 1985, and Kate Bazeley, who set a new standard of 55:34 in 2016
