The province’s first ever football field will be officially unveiled Tuesday in St. John’s.

Thanks to a collaborative effort with the province, the City of St. John’s and Husky Energy, the official football field will be situated at Wishingwell Park.

Goalposts were purchased in July thanks to a project between Football NL, Avalon Minor Football, the City of St. John’s, Husky Energy and the provincial government, and they will be unveiled 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Football is a sport that is gaining in popularity across the province. Beginning in 2013, the sport has grown from two divisions to three, with flag and tackle teams in Labrador, Conception Bay North, and metro St. John’s. Plans are currently under way to introduce teams in Corner Brook.

The provincial U-16 tackle team recently competed at the second annual 2018 Atlantic Bowl in July on Prince Edward Island. It is the first time all the Atlantic provinces have been represented at a football tournament.
