Matthew Bonnell of Corner Brook went wire to wire in winning the 2018 Royal LePage Newfoundland and Labrador junior golf championship Wednesday at the Terra Nova Resort and Golf Community in Port Blandford.
Bonnell, who plays out of the Blomidon Golf Club, had been the runner-up at the 2017 provincial juniors, but was dominant at Terra Nova’s Twin Rivers course this week, recording a 223 total after finishing with a three-over-par 74 on Wednesday.
Bonnell finished 12 strokes ahead of runner-up Ryan McNeil-Lamswood of Harmon Seaside Links in Stephenville, with Michael Simms of Clovelly in third.
Evan D'Angelo and Gavin Connors, both from Clovelly, were tied for fourth after three rounds of stroke play. That necessitated a sudden-death playoff to determine which would have the first opportunity to represent the province at national championships. Connors won on the second playoff hole.
In the juvenile division, Alex Dolomount of Clovelly recorded a final round 87 for a three-day total of 262 to capture the title over Day 2 leader Ethan Efford of Bally Haly in St. John’s by seven strokes. Nathan Young of Clovelly was third.
In the bantam division, Jack Pelley-MacHardy of Grand Falls-Windsor replicated Bonnell’s feat by leading from start to finish ahead of Karsen Best of Holyrood and Evan Snow of Gander.
The event also determined the provincial team for the Future Links Atlantic championships to be held at Terra Nova July 16-19
Bonnell, McNeil-Lamswood and Simms comprise the junior men’s while Taylor Cormier of Blomidon in Corner Brook will be the lone female representative for the Atlantic competition.
