Girls high school basketball: Near perfection for St. Kevin’s

Mavericks take provincial girls 4A title with their 31st win their 32nd game of the season

The St. Kevin’s Mavericks capped off a near-perfect 2017-18 high school basketball season over the weekend, winning the School Sports NL provincial 4A high school girls’ championship on home court.

 

In the Goulds, the Mavs trimmed the Holy Heart Highlanders 62-43 in the championship game Sunday, behind Emma Power’s 17 points and Grace Bennett’s 16. Both girls have signed on to play with the Memorial Sea-Hawks next season.

Hayley Kearsey netted 13 points in a losing cause.

The Mavericks went 31-1 on the season, with tournament victories in the Keith Keating Memorial, Clarence Sutton Classic and Elite 8 as well.

Tournament sportsmanship and ability awards were presented to Katie Cousens of O’Donel, Alyssa Jenkins of Waterford Valley, Erin Long of Holy Heart, Bennett, Power and Kielly Emberley of St. Kevin’s.

In semifinal play Saturday, St. Kevin’s beat defending champion Waterford Valley Warriors 68-48 on Power’s 20 points. Emberley and Bennett both had 16. Alyssa Jenkins scored 14 and Kristen Jenkins netted 11 for the Warriors.

Holy Heart went off on the O’Donel Patriots in the other semifinal to the tune of 81-38. Long scored 17 for the Highlanders, and Hayley Kearsey had 16. Cousens scored 16 points for the Pats.
