Nearly 100 golfers competing in eight divisions

Published on July 17, 2017

A total of 99 golfers — 80 men and 19 women — from across Newfoundland and Labrador have converged on The Wilds Golf Resort on Salmonier Line to compete in the 2017 Royal LePage provincial amateur golf championships, beginning today.

Play over three rounds will determine the provincial champion in men's and women's amateur, mid-amateur, senior and super seniors dvisions.

The competition will also be used to select provincial teams for Atlantic and national championships later this summer.

Defending provincial champions competing this week include 2016 men’s mid-amateur and senior winner Chuck Conley of Bally Haly in St. John’s; Don Boland of Bally Haly, who took the men’s super senior crown last year; Kathleen Jean of Harmon Seaside Links in Stephenville-who is defending three titles — women’s amateur, mid-amateur; and Humber Valley Resort member and provincial Hall of Famer Judy Gillam, who will try to duplicate her super senior win from last year.

Defending men’s amateur champion Blair Bursey of Gander will not be in the provincial for the first time in eight years

A switch in venues — Bally Haly to the Wilds — and subsequent change in dates led to a scheduling conflict for the Gander golfer and U.S. collegiate star, who has been entered in major amateur events across North America this summer.
