A.J. Whiffen, who might be better known for stopping pucks, put his strong right arm on display Monday night, tossing a complete-game, three-hit gem with 11 strikeouts as Knights blanked Feildians 3-0 in one of two St. John’s Molson senior baseball games.

At St. Pat’s Ball Park, Whiffen, one of the province’s top senior hockey goaltenders with a bunch of Herder Memorial Trophy championships under his belt, issued only one walk.

Ryan Harnett (6IP, 8H, 3R, 3ER, 2BB, 1K) was the hard-luck loser with a complete-game effort.

The Feildians’ Adam Lawlor had Whiffen’s number, with a pair of singles.

In another game, Gerald Butt had two base hits, walked twice and scored a pair of runs, and Dan Connors pitched a complete-game seven-hitter as RMM Gonzaga Vikings trimmed Holy Cross Trinity Pub 10-2.

Connors pitched six innings, walked three and struck out five. Matthew Smith, the first of three Holy Cross pitchers, started and was tagged with the loss. He lasted only one inning.

Steve Crouse had two hits in a losing cause.
