Two athletes who represented Newfoundland and Labrador at the 2017 Canada Summer Games were presented with Team Gushue Awards by Premier Dwight Ball at the 14th annual Premier’s Athletic Awards in St. John’s on Tuesday.
Each award is valued at $5,000 and is given annually to one female and one male who excel both athletically and academically.
This year’s winners are wrestler Angel Hiltz-Morrell of Avondale and softball player Jordan Pomeroy of Placentia.
Hiltz-Morrell, a Grade 11 student at Roncalli High School, had the province’s lone podium finish at the 2017 Canada Games in Winnipeg, claiming  a silver medal. She was also the flagbearer for Team Newfoundland and Labrador at the Games closing ceremonies.
Pomeroy, a first year kinesiology student at Memorial University, played in the Canada Games and at two other national softball championships in 2017. He is on the roster of the Canadian team that is competing at the 2018 world junior men’s softball championship in Saskatchewan this July.
They were among 120 athletes receiving Premier’s Athletic Awards Tuesday. The awards program recognizes athletic excellence and provides financial support to help offset the costs of training and competition. Grants range from $500 to $1,500 and are awarded based on the level of competition and the athletes’ accomplishments.
