The St. John’s IceCaps’ future is in the Stars.
The IceCaps will be facing the Texas Stars, Dallas's farm team, in the American Hockey League’s Calder Cup final, beginning Sunday in Cedar Park, Tex, a suburb of Austin.
The Stars won the AHL Western Conference final Tuesday night, defeating the Toronto Marlies 6-2 in a seventh and deciding game at the Cedar Park Center, a couple of hours after St. John’s clinched the Eastern Conference title with a 5-0 victory over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins at Mile One Centre.
Game 2 of the Stars-IceCaps best-of-seven series will be Monday in Cedar Park, before the series shifts to Mile One in St. John’s for Game 3 on Wednesday, June 11, followed by a five-day break because of a medical convention/trade show in the building.
That means Game 4 won’t be played until Monday, June 16, while Game 5, if necessary, would go the following night, June 17 at Mile One.
With the Stars owning the best regular-season record in the AHL, they have home-ice advantage in the series, and would exercise it in any necessary Games 6 and 7 in Cedar Park, which are scheduled for Thursday June 19 and Monday, June 23.
A full seven-game series would be played over 15 days, with two lengthy breaks. That’s because both teams are dealing with scheduling issues in their home buildings.
For the IceCaps it’s the annual convention and associated trade show of the Canadian Anesthesiologists' Society (CAS), which which was booked for Mile One in 2009, two years before the IceCaps existed. The convention begins Friday June 13 and ends Sunday, June 15, but Thursday, June 12 is also unavailable for a Calder Cup game because it is needed for set up of the trade show.
On the Stars’ end, the series will have somewhat of a delayed start because the Cedar Park Center will be the site of high school convocations on Thursday, Friday and Saturday of this week. As well, there would be a four-day break between Game 6 and 7 — if both needed to be played — because the building is booked for a rodeo.
All games will have 7:30 p.m. start times, which represents a bit of a victory for the IceCaps, who had been told by Mile One officials last week that there would have to be an earlier start — likely 6 p.m. — for Game 3 on Wednesday, June 11 because extra time would be needed for advance work in preparation of the CAS convention.
Tickets for all Calder Cup final games at Mile One will go on sale beginning today at 12 noon.
Purchases can be made in person at the Mile One box office, by phone ( 709-576-7657) or online at www.mileonecentre.com.
