The Breakers booked their spot in the best-of-seven championship series by Trinity-Placentia I.J. Smith Home Hardware Flyers in a semifinal that went the distance. Southern Shore won Monday night’s Game 7 in Mobile in dramatic fashion, prevailing 5-4 as Justin David scored the deciding marker with 16 seconds remaining in regulation time.
The result capped off a big series comeback for the Shore, which had trailed 3-1 in the semifinal.
The Capitals beat the Cowan Heights Dental Group St. John’s Caps in five games in the other semifinal.
Avalon is no stranger to the league final — this will be the team’s fifth straight appearance in the series. Avalon last won the league championship in 2014, defeating Southern Shore, then lost to St. John’s and Conception Bay North the next two seasons.
The Breakers will have home-ice advantage in the final, having finished first in the regular season standings with a 21-5-2 record. Avalon (18-10-0) was fourth.
Friday’s series opener has a 7:40 p.m. start time. Game 2 is Saturday night (8 o’clock) at the Goulds Arena.
