Zachary Bennett and Dawson Mercer have made the 24-man season-opening roster of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s Drummondville Voltigeurs.
The two have played with each other throughout their hockey careers, including the 2016-17 season when they were with the Bishop's College School U18 varsity team in Sherbrooke, Que.
Mercer, a centre, was the eighth overall pick in the June’s QMJHL draft, so his making the Voltigeurs wasn’t a surprise. Bennett, however, was considered more of a longshot as he had been Drummondville’s 13th-round pick in June, a year after the 17-year-old defenceman went unselected in the 2016 draft.
The QMJHL regular season begins Sept. 21.
