Playoff MVP Brandon Short made 29 saves, and the leading scorer in the post-season, Michael Broders, had a goal and two assists as the Mount Pearl Marks Blades capped off a brilliant 2017-18 season with the St. John’s Junior Hockey League championship Sunday night.

The Blades beat the CBR Assante Wealth Management Renegades 5-1, and will now represent the province in the Don Johnson Cup Atlantic junior B championship April 24-29 in Sydney, N.S.

It was all Blades this season as Mount Pearl won its first junior championship since 2008-09.

The Blades were 26-2 during the regular season, and then went 11-1 in the playoffs.

Mount Pearl won the best-of-seven final 4-1.

At The Glacier in Mount Pearl, Stephen Predham had a goal and an assist for the winners Sunday. Mitch McGrath, Jacob Tavenor and Brady Normore also scored for the Blades.

Tyler Wall had the lone goal for the Renegades.

The Blades grabbed a 3-1 series lead Saturday at the C.B.S. Arena with a 4-3 win, thanks to a pair of goals and an assist from Broders. Predham and Jared Ostroski also scored for the Blades. Tyler Nickson, Blake Fudge and Tyler Hennessey had the CBR goals.

Newfoundland last won the Don Johnson Cup back in 2009, when the St. John’s Caps won it all in Bay Roberts. Before that, you’d have to go all the way back to 1988 when the St. John’s Junior 50s won the fourth of four straight Newfoundland and Labrador championships in the Atlantic junior B tournament. The 50s won three of those championships, and the Blades one.
