Breakers win twice on ECSHL’s inaugural weekend

The Southern Shore Breakers registered a pair of victories over the weekend as the new East Coast Senior Hockey League opened its inaugural season.

Saturday night at the Southern Shore Arena, the Breakers received a natural hat trick from Brandon Pye in a 7-4 win over the St. John’s Caps. Scott McCarthy had a pair and Steve Fowler and Brandon Brown netted singles. Rookie Peter Kavanagh, who played for the St. John’s Junior Hockey League champion Southern Shore Junior Breakers last season, collected three assists.

Dakota Warren, Justin O’Reilly, Jacob Pitcher and Terry Ryan netted singles.

The Breakers scored four first-period goals and cruised to a 7-2 win over the Northeast Eagles Friday.

At Jack Byrne Arena, McCarthy and Stephen Oates both scored twice for the Breakers, while Damien Ryan, Andrew Gale and Cory Blackmore potted singles. Kavanagh had five helpers.

James Cadigan and Mike Halitzki replied for Northeast.

Mark Power stopped 28 shots in the Breakers’ goal. Mark Yetman was tested 42 times in the Eagles’ crease.

In another game Friday, Matthew Fewer netted two goals as the St. John’s Caps skated to a 5-1 win over the Conception Bay Blues.

At Twin Rinks, Scott Bray kicked out 39 of 40 shots and rookie Dakota Warren, Jeremy Barron and Terry Ryan scored singles for the Caps. Brandon Street opened the game’s scoring for the Blues, who got a 41-save performance from Matt Jenkins.
