ST. ANTHONY, NL – It was a heated championship finale at the Easter Hockey Tournament in St. Anthony.
The Conception Bay Regional Renegades and Port aux Basques Blaze faced off the evening of Saturday, April 7. The game was tight and unpredictable with teams scoring and tying the game throughout.
Coming to the close of the third period, the Renegades led the game 4-3. But in the last 32 seconds of the third period the Blaze tied it back with a goal.
Another fierce goal came immediately into overtime. Renegades Luke Dunn took the game’s winning goal only 12 seconds into overtime, immediately met with rousing cheers from the crowd and the Renegades players tossing their sticks and embracing. The final score was 5-4 for the Renegades.
The tournament ran from April 5-7 with enthusiastic crowds and teams from across the island. Both Renegades and Blaze fans had made the long haul to St. Anthony to shout and cheer during the championship game.
The Paradise Warriors took bronze at the tournament. On Friday night, the tournament held a moment of silence in honour of the Humboldt Broncos team.
