Updated to show Curtis Heffernan played for Halifax on opening night

The 2018-19 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League season opened last week with a dozen players from Newfoundland and Labrador on Q league rosters.

Those 12 included forward Liam Leonard from Clarenville (Acadie-Bathurst Titan) and defenceman Greg Kehoe of St. John’s (Charlottetown Islanders). Leonard appeared in two games with the Quebec Remparts two years ago, and one game with the Titan last season.

And with a whack of players still at NHL training camps, the Halifax Mooseheads had a number of callups from Maritime junior league for their opening contest Friday. Among them was D-man Curtis Heffernan of St. John's. Heffernan had an assist in 5-4 Halifax win over Saint John in that first game.

Heffernan was back with the Maritime league's Truro Bearcats for a game later that weekend.

QMJHL returnees from this province include an Smallwood of St. John’s (Cape Breton Screaming Eagles), Brett Budgell of St. John’s (Islanders), Jesse Sutton of Mount Pearl (Chicoutimi Sagueneens), Dawson Mercer of Bay Roberts (Drummondville Voltigeurs), Joel Bishop of St. John’s, Kyle Petten of Bay Roberts and Jordan Maher of Gander (Halifax Mooseheads), Matthew Grouchy of Labrador City (Quebec Remparts) and Lucas Fitzpatrick of St. John’s (Shawinigan Cataractes).
