Flyers a win away from place in SJJHL final

The Trinity-Placentia I.J. Smith Home Building Center Flyers are one win away from a berth in the St. John’s Junior Hockey League final following a 5-3 win over the Southern Shore C&W Offshore Breakers Sunday afternoon in Whitbourne.

The Flyers lead the best-of-seven semifinal 3-1 over a Breakers squad that finished first in the regular-season standings. Trinity-Placentia was sixth in the league this season.
At the Trinity-Placentia Stadium, Patrick Churchill paced the Flyers with two goals. Josh St. George, Tyler Whittle and Conal McNamara netted singles. Liam Hynes, Matt Templeman and Kieran O’Driscoll replied.
Game 5 is 8 p.m. Friday at the Southern Shore Arena in Mobile.
The Flyers took a 2-1 series lead with a 5-3 win Friday night in Mobile. Connor Stevens led the way with three goals, and Lyndon Thorne had two for the win.
In the other series, the Avalon Roebothan McKay Marshall Capitals edged the St. John’s Cowan Heights Dental Group Caps 3-2 Saturday night at Twin Rinks for a 2-0 lead.
David Penney led the charge with two goals, and Andrew Paul had the single. St. John’s goals came from Chris Mallard and Grant Nolan.
The teams meet again 8:30 tonight at the Goulds Arena.
